-May 21, 2002 - Part Five - Exploring Loews-

We explored the theatre area a little more and found this back room which would've been in the area behind the snack counter. I assume they stored supplies for the snack counter back here.

The theatre bathroom had broken tiles and all sorts of foulness everywhere. Our Tour Guide told us a story about when the construction workers first started exploring the different areas of The Mall. He was searching the bathrooms with a flashlight and found a pair of legs sticking out from a stall. Since The Mall had been closed for several years, he feared he was going to find a dead body. After he finally opened the stall door he found that some prankster had put a pair of mannequin legs in the stall.

This is the Loews sticker I ended up taking to add to my collection of Penn Can Mall stuff.

We probably wouldn't have gone into as many places as we did if it wasn't for the encouragement of our Tour Guide. Here he shows us the stairway up to the projection booth.

I don't know what I expected, but all we found was a small room with three holes in the wall, a small bathroom and a small storage room.

Here is a closer look inside one of the holes the projectors would sit in to show the movie.

What is nitrate film you ask? After doing some research I found out that it was a highly flammable film that could ignite at temperatures as low as 120F. The last time it was made was the mid-1950s, so I'm not sure why this notice was here (the theatre opened in 1976).

Here is a wider shot of the projection room. Once again, the only light was the spotlight on my camera so it was a little creepy not knowing what to expect when we went into different rooms or around corners.

The theatres opening and closing dates were written on the wall in the storage area upstairs.

"Thank you for coming to Loews, sit back and relax, enjoy the show!"
